I graduated from the University of Texas in 2004 with a Ph.D. in English. My master’s thesis focused on queer writers associated with the West Coast “New Narrative” movement, while my dissertation explored the narrative structures of popular story universes from DC Comics to Star Wars.

I write about queer people discovering themselves in fictional worlds. Those worlds are genre-influenced - science fiction, horror, fantasy - but I hold on loosely to the genre’s rules. I enjoy the writing most when the worlds are as complex as the people.

My 20-year sitting practice and the system of Zen Buddhism are influences on my work. Natalie Goldberg’s approach to writing was formative, as is the example of Jung’s “Red Book” Liber Novus.

I believe fiction is a powerful mode for psychological exploration and movement. These days I write most often with myself as the only audience.

Since late 2025, I’ve been experimenting in novel writing with an agentic harness and LLMs as tooling. I (with an agent) have written about this process.
